Librarian recycles phones to offer e-learning content

The Laibu Mkononi reconditions old smartphones, printers and even internet routers to provide e-learning content. They become suitable for settlements and far-flung places where access to electricity and internet connectivity is a mirage.

Old electronic gadgets are worth gold in Kenya. They are turned into e-learning devices. The gadgets are loaded with educational content. It doesn't need an internet connection. "Laibu Mkononi" is suitable for remote areas. It means "library in your hands" in Sheng and Kiswahili. It benefits hearing-impaired children in Mombasa. Educators bring the devices to homes in Kilifi. In addition to encouraging reading in rural areas, Laibu Mkoni introduces children to the digital world.
