Library Fire Destroyed 50,000 Books

A fire at the Duchess Anna Amalia Library in Weimar in eastern Germany on Septemner 2 caused more damage than originally estimated, according to preliminary reports. About 50,000 books dating from the 17th and 18th century, including 90 percent of the library's music collection, have been destroyed. Experts had believed only 30,000 books had been lost. An additional 62,000 books have been badly damaged. Police officials are still investigating the cause of the fire.
