In an hour DW-WORLD.DE will bring you the second quarter final between Italy and Ukraine, two teams who failed to convince in their last sixteen games. The winner here will play Germany who beat Argentina after a penalty shoot-out in their game earlier.

The Line-ups:

Italy coach Marcello Lippi recalled forward Francesco Totti and midfielder Mauro Camoranesi to his starting line-up for the quarter-final match against Ukraine in Hamburg on Friday. Striker Alberto Gilardino was left out along with Alessandro Del Piero as Lippi reverted to playing with a sole striker in Luca Toni. Ukraine coach Oleg Blokhin brought in Artem Milevsky to replace the injured Andriy Voronin, who is Andriy Shevchenko's usual strike partner. Defenders Andriy Rusol and Vyacheslav Svidersky returned to the starting eleven after suspension with Vladislav Vashchyuk dropping to the bench.

The teams walk onto the pitch.


No to any form of discrimination is the message read by the two team captains.


The anthems.
Thousands of fans sing along as does most players.

The stadium is still not quite full as Germans with tickets are on the streets of Hamburg celebrating the earlier victory of their team.

First half is kicked off by Ukraine.

Gattuso hits in a nice ball to Toni outside the box but as he turns he loses possession.

2. min.
Grosso goes down and wins a free-kick.

4. min.
First real chance. Camoranesi goes towards the Ukrainian box and shoots outside the box. The shot is a meter wide.

5. min.
The Ukraine's turn. Shevchenko slides a ball into the box that Milevsky heels towards the spot. No one is there.

Zambrotta scores!
The Italian defender gets the ball after good work by Totti and heads for the Ukrainian box. No one tries to stop him and he gets a good shot on goal that passes Shovkovsky and finds the right, lower corner of the goal.

8. min.
The three Italian top men are putting pressure on the Ukraininan ball holder.

10. min.
A Ukrainian long ball to Gusev ends up being too long. He can't reach before it goes over the side line.

12. min.
The Ukrainians are trying to build and the Italians have backed down a little bit to try to stop them at the mid line.

14. min.
Milevsky and Gattuso fall on the pitch after going for a header. Gattuso goes off the pitch temporarily.

15. min.
Ukraine have not found any way to pass the Italian line and are trying to reach their lone striker with long balls.

16. min.
Svidersky sees yellow.
The resulting free-kick is taken by Totti whose ball just reaches the Ukraine goal from about thirty meters.

17. min.
The Ukraine are struggling to get the ball out of their own half. The Italians are defending well at the moment.

19. min.
Svidersky leaves for Vorobey.


21. min.
Kalinichenko is booked after fouling Camoranesi.

The Italians are in full control of the game. After their goal the've played a relaxed game and take their time to build up chances and at the same time putting pressure on the Ukrainian ball holder.

Ukraine win a free-kick just inside offensive half but soon lose the ball.

26. min.
Gattuso is down again after accidentally having had his arm walked on by a Ukraine player.

27. min.
First real attempt by the Ukraine. They keep the ball in the Italian half for a while, passing between the team and the cross reaches Shevchenko who unfortunately heads it on instead of on goal. The second cross is kicked away by the Italian defense.

29. min.
Instead of trying to keep the ball in offensive half, Ukraine's next attack attempt is yet again a long ball quickly sweeped up by the Italians.

32. min.
The Italians have all the time in the world. They play well, waiting for the next good chance, but possibly boring for the people in the stands.

34. min.
The crowd is whistling and it's most likely the Ukraine fans who want to see more of their team.

35. min.
A good free-kick opportunity for Italy. Thirty meters out. The Ukraine defense are first on the ball.

36. min.
Kalinichenko wins a free-kick on the Italian half. The kick is low and kicked out by an Italian foot.

39. min.
The Italians have a short blast of speed, combining nicely,and the tempo is at the highest yet for a couple of minutes. No decent chances come out of it though.

40. min.
Shevchenko fires off a shot that deflects and Buffon looks as if he's going to have some problems at first but then pulls the ball into his arms at the root of his left post.

42. min.
Ukraine are slowly working their way into the game and although no real chances have resulted yet, the Italians will have to be a bit careful and not get to passive.

45. min.
Rusol sits down on the pitch and unties his boot. Someone must have stepped on his foot.

45+1. min.
Rusol has to go off. Vashchuk goes on.


45+2. min.
First half is over.
The Italians have played it safe but also very well organized after their goal. Ukraine will have to put an effort in to have a chance in second half.

Second half kicks off.
Italy begin with the ball.

Totti finds Toni running down the right side. The Italian striker hits his shot on the right side of the goal.

47. min.
Cannavaro gets the ball on his family jewels and we take a short break--

48. min.
Good chance for Ukraine. Shevchenko passes Kalinichenko who crosses it in. Not far from the Ukrainian players.

50. min.
An even better chance. The next Cross goes passed every one and Gusin is free to head on goal. A reflex save by Buffon saves the Italians.

53. min.
Again the Ukrainians come. A dangerous cross. The Italians struggle to get the ball out of their box.

54. min.
The Italians will have to watch out. They have started second half too passively.

55. min.
Great free-kick position for the Italians. 24 meters away from the goal. The ball is lobbed over the wall to Grosso who can't finish.

57. min.
Saved on the goal line!
A good attempt by Ukraine who first get one shot on goal saved by Buffon and then another saved by a defender.

Italy make a short corner and the cross hit by Totti finds Toni's head. The striker scores his first goal of the Cup, a goal that could prove important for games to come.

Vorobey hits the bar!
A cross from Kalinichenko is headed straight onto the bar. After a slow first half the Ukrainians must be said to have earned a goal.

64. min.
The game has opened up after the second Italian goal. Ukraine have to take risks which opens up for Italian counters.

66. min.
Milevsky booked

Two changes in the Italian team.
Camoranesi goes for Oddo and Pirlo leaves room for Barone.

Italy's third goal!

Zambrotta gets the ball on the left side of the box and moves in to pass a perfect ball over to Toni who can simply put his foot to the ball to score his second of the night.

Milevsky goes out for Belik.


73. min.
Ukraine try from left and right and left again but all their crosses are taken care of by the tight and impressive Italian defense.

74. min.
At last a cross finds Shevchenko but the Ukraine striker goes up too late and his header goes high.

76. min.
Gattuso goes for Zaccardo.

Ukraine are trying to break the Italians high up but look a bit as if they know it's all over.

79. min.
Shevchenko fires off a free-kick from thirty five meters that Buffon, who's been yelling at his wall knowing the Ukrainian striker's abilities, has to punch away.

81. min.
Luca Toni chips the ball just outside the box and over to Totti who gets a good chance at goal steering the ball with a volley but Shovkovsky catches the ball.

84. min.
The Italian crowd have started celebrating, knowing anything but a surreal night mare will see them through.

86. min.
A decent chance for Ukraine. Gusev hits the cross that Belik heads on goal but it's no real challenge for Buffon.

89. min.
Shevchenko has his own show and dances in between two Italian defense men, combines with Belik and gets the ball back at which point he triggers the ref's whistle after an offensive foul.

90+1. min.
Vorobey tries a shot that goes well high.

90+2. min.
Game is over. Italy beat Ukraine.
