Protests over basic needs like electricity and water escalated in Madagascar since last week, leaving at least 22 dead in clashes with police. The island nation off Africa's east coast remains among the world's poorest.

Madagascar is one of the world's poorest countries, with about 80% of people living on less than US $2.15 a day and many lacking reliable access to water and electricity.

In recent days, mass youth-led protests over blackouts and shortages have erupted into violent clashes with security forces. Demonstrators openly defy President Andry Rajoelina, whose dissolution of the government has failed to quell unrest, as frustration over unfulfilled promises and worsening living conditions continues to mount.
