The number of department stores in Germany has been falling steadily for about two decades, with the drop in Karstadt branches particularly marked. Business at the remaining Karstadt stores is still contracting. Now, the place where families traditionally shopped is again on the brink of ruin.

The head of Karstadt's supervisory board says one in four of the branches must be closed, or it will mean the end of the chain altogether.
