An island in transformation: offshore technology is changing the face of a vacation paradise. Our series on a controversial development. Helgoland is Germany’s only deep-sea island, located in the middle of the North Sea. Until now, islanders relied on income from tourism. But now the idyllic island is undergoing a revamp: to become the world’s "first offshore service island”.

It’s meant to serve as a base for people involved in the construction and maintenance of wind parks just a few kilometers off the coast of Helgoland.
