Scientists in the US have announced a major breakthough - unveiling the first self- replicating bacteria cell controlled by a synthetic genome. Craig Venter - a genome pioneer- hopes to use this technique to engineer bacteria specially designed to produce vaccines, fuel or even help absorb greenhouse gases. But critics have expressed reservations saying the technique could be misused.
