Man Arrested for Threatening TV Tower

September 14, 2005

A 60-year-old, mentally ill man was arrested on Tuesday for threatening to blow up the 300-meter-high (950-foot) Olympic broadcasting tower in Munich, German police said. Up to 200 police were called to the scene after the man, carrying a bag and a small box, threatened to detonate an explosive device inside the tower's revolving restaurant. Police later found the German was carrying fake explosives. Nearly 100 staff and diners were evacuated from the tower as well as swimmers at a nearby pool. The area around the building was cordoned off during the drama and a nearby underground train station was also closed. Earlier the man had been handing out "suspicious leaflets" demanding an end to so-called tests on human beings. He was taken in for questioning and will appear in court on Wednesday.
