Police said on Thursday that a man had died after being critically wounded in an apparent hostage situation at a bank branch in Regensburg, Bavaria.

The man was taken to a local hospital but was pronounced dead soon after.

A major police operation, including special units and a helicopter, had gathered near the scene on Thursday afternoon.

What else do we know about the standoff?

Police said they were investigating "a homicide as well as suspected attempted robbery," in an update later on Thursday.

"Two people were still inside the building. Special units were able to bring them out of the building in the mean time," police said.

At around 6 p.m. local time, around three hours after the first emergency calls reached police, authorities said that the suspect had been apprehended.

He was identified as a German national aged 20 and was arrested without injury, police said

"The police operations on site continue and are not yet complete. Among other things the building is still being searched at present," police said.

The male suspect was believed to be armed with a knife and was thought to be acting alone.

Police repeatedly asked members of the public to steer clear of the operation area.

Earlier updates from law enforcement suggested the motive of the suspect was not known and that no demands had been issued to police.

Regensburg is a city of around 150,000 people located roughly between Nuremberg and Munich in Bavaria, not far from the border to the Czech Republic. The bank branch is located in the west of the city, near the river Danube.
