A man was shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent during an arrest in New York City, US federal authorities and Mayor Zohran Mamdani said Thursday.

The shooting occurred at around 4 p.m. local time (2100 GMT) in the Marble Hill neighborhood of Manhattan.

The New York Police Department said its officers were not involved in the incident and that the man was conscious and receiving medical attention at a nearby hospital.

Mamdani urges Trump to end ICE actions in NYC

New York City Mayor Mamdani condemned the shooting and said he had contacted President Trump.

Mamdani added that a five-year-old child was reportedly in the car during the shooting, but that the child was "physically unharmed."

"This is an unconscionable and incredibly serious situation," Mamdani said in a post on X. "I have called the President; when we speak I will demand that he ends all ICE enforcement actions in our city. I will not stand by while ICE agents terrorize our communities."

New York Governor Kathy Hochul said she had spoken with Trump and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Markwayne Mullin about the shooting. DHS is the parent agency of ICE.

"I expressed outrage on behalf of New Yorkers and urged them to halt ICE enforcement operations in New York," Hochul said. "I also asked that any body camera footage of the shooting be released to the public so we can establish the facts and get to the truth."

Federal govt says 'criminal illegal alien' in hospital receiving treatment

In a post on X, DHS had confirmed that an "ICE officer discharged his weapon" during an attempt to arrest a "criminal illegal alien from the Dominican Republic" with ties "to the Trinitarios gang."

DHS said the man had a prior conviction for grand larceny and had been arrested "multiple" times for assault, robbery, possession of drugs, and weapons possession.

DHS noted ICE officers immediately rendered aid after the man was injured. "The individual is alive and at a local hospital," the statement said, adding that the FBI was on the scene.

ICE, CBP fatal shootings raise alarm in second Trump term

Deadly ICE and Border Patrol shootings have drawn major controversy during Trump's second term, particularly regarding the training and oversight of the agents.

An ICE agent killed a 37-year-old US citizen, Renee Good, during their operations in Minneapolis in January, triggering demonstrations there and in several other US cities.

Later that month, Alex Pretti, another US citizen, was killed by two US Customs and Border Protection officers agents in Minneapolis following an altercation.
