A 22-year-old woman has died ​after a ​shooting ​at ‌a rave ​in Aarau, near Zürich,  Switzerland, ​police said Sunday.

The woman was an Italian national, Italy's Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Five other people, aged between 24 and 27, were wounded in the incident, some of them seriously, according to local police.

Swiss police were hunting at least one gunman who opened fire at the overnight rave party — a rare event in the Alpine nation despite relatively widespread gun ownership.

"For the moment, we have no reliable information regarding the perpetrators. We do not know whether it is a single person or several, nor whether they fled in a vehicle or on foot," police spokesman Bernhard Graser told reporters.

"Certain elements suggest they may no longer be in the area, but we have still deployed a significant police presence in the region ... so that we can arrest them if they are still there," he added.

Officers urged people to stay away from the area, and asked for any videos or images of the incident.

Police in Freiburg, in neighboring Germany, were also taking part in the manhunt, the German news agency dpa reported.

What else do we know about the Switzerland shooting?

According to Swiss newspaper Blick, the shots were fired before 3:00 a.m. local time (0100 GMT) during the annual Aarauer Rave.

The newspaper quoted police spokeswoman Vanessa Rumpold as saying that the shooting occurred at the Schachen race course where the techno party was being held.

Aarau has about 22,300 residents and is located about 40 kilometers (25 miles) west of Zürich.
