Germany attacker Marco Reus has been ruled out of their upcoming Euro 2016 qualifiers against Poland and Scotland after team doctors diagnosed a fracture in the big toe of his left foot on Wednesday night. The injury to one of Reus' distal phalanges (the smallest bones right at the tip of the toe) occurred during Borussia Dortmund's league game against Hertha Berlin last weekend. Reus has already left the national squad, but the length of time he will spend on the sideline remains unknown.
"The painful injury which the 25-times capped international sustained in the Bundesliga match against Hertha Berlin (last week) makes his participation in the two international matches impossible," the German team said in a statement. "Further treatment will be undertaken at Borussia Dortmund."
The 26-year-old missed Germany's 2014 World Cup triumph after tearing an ankle ligament in the final warm-up match in June, just before the team flew to Brazil. Reus then suffered two more ankle injuries in September and then November last season as his progress continues to be held back by his fitness.
Germany take on Group D leaders Poland in Frankfurt on Friday before travelling to Glasgow to face Scotland three days later. They are second in the group on 13 points from six matches, one behind the Poles and two ahead of third-placed Scotland.
