Finland's former president Martti Ahtisaari has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. The Nobel committee recognized Ahtisaari's efforts as an international peace mediator over a period of three decades. Having served for several years as a special envoy for the United Nations, Ahtisaari has been involved in efforts to resolves numerous conflicts including those in Namibia, Indonesia, Northern Ireland and Iraq.
