Maya Shwayder

January 4, 2018

I once spilled my lunch on the shoes of the Israeli ambassador to the UN. That’s probably going to be the opening line of my obituary.

DW News Moderatorin Maya Shwayder (Artikelbild)

Born in:
Detroit, Michigan, USA (I don’t know Eminem).

Languages:
English, Italian, German, and on a good day Spanish and French.

Degrees/Journalistic experience:
BA in Psychology and Italian Language and Literature from Harvard University.
Master’s in Journalism from Columbia University.
Worked in New York as a freelancer, at Facebook, and as the United Nations correspondent for the Jerusalem Post.
I once got fired from an internship for tweeting wrong.
2013 ieiMedia Fellow at Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
2014 Arthur F. Burns fellow in Berlin.
I also got fired from another internship for “looking bored.”
Point is, this is all far less glamorous than it sounds, I assure you.

With DW since:
2015, and it hasn’t been shut down yet!

Favorite quote:
"Hooray. He’s kicked the ball. Now the ball’s over there. That man has it now. That’s an interesting development. Maybe he’ll kick the ball. He has indeed, and apparently that deserves a round of applause.” – Moss, “IT Crowd,” Series 3, Episode 2, summing up all sports ever.

My personal hero:
J.K. Rowling.

What do I strive to be as a journalist?
Entertaining. Employed. Ideally alive and not arrested.
