The English city of York appears frozen in time. The charming narrow alleyways of the historic center even inspired the famous Harry Potter stories.

Medieval York was once among the most powerful cities in Britain. Nowadays, visitors enter through ancient gates dating back to the 14th century, surrounded by the longest surviving medieval city walls in England.

At its heart stands York Minster, the largest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe after Cologne. Nearby, The Shambles is one of Europe's best-preserved medieval streets, where quirky shops now sell everything from ghosts to magic potions.

And with around 500 alleged ghost sightings, York's spooky legends live on through guided ghost tours.
