The German Chancellor Angela Merkel has come out in favour of extending the lifespan of the country's nuclear power plants by the another ten to fifteen years. This would mean reversing a landmark legislation by a previous SPD-Green government under which all of Germany's commercial nuclear reactor's would be phased out by 2022. The government also wants the nuclear energy companies to pay some 2-point-three billion euros a year in new taxes for the extension.
