Antje Bauer, a freelance journalist and Islamic scholar, has been reporting for many years from and about parts of the world where refugees are on the move. Malte Lehming is a journalist at Germany's Tagesspiegel newspaper, who regularly comments on developments in refugee policy. He says, "We have to admit that mistakes have been made in our policies regarding refugees."

 

Mekonnen Mesghena was born in Eritrea, and fled to Germany in the early 1980s. Today, he heads the department for migration at the Heinrich Böll Foundation. He says, "Germany is not using the right tools in order to protect the truly needy. It's 'survival of the fittest.'"
