Mexico Coach Apologizes for Sharp Tongue
September 9, 2005Volatile Mexico coach Ricardo La Volpe apologized to anyone he might have offended after his side booked their place at the 2006 World Cup. The former Argentina goalkeeper has recently described the Mexican media as sinister, former striker Hugo Sanchez as a paper idol and opponents the United States as a little team his grandmother could play for. "I want to say sorry if, at any moment, I caused discomfort to any member of the national football family," he was quoted as saying on the Mexican federation's official Web site. "In the name of my players and the technical staff, I offer apologies for any declarations which provoked controversy." Mexico qualified for the Germany tournament with two matches to spare by beating Panama 5-0 at the Azteca stadium on Wednesday. La Volpe has achieved good results and rebuilt the team during his three years in charge but his tempestuous comments have split Mexican football.
