Thousands of Democrats have gathered for their party's national convention -- a four-day spectacle culminating in the official nomination of Barack Obama as their candidate for president. More than 4000 delegates and 15,000 journalists are on hand. But the main star of the attraction, Barack Obama himself, wasn't physically present for the first day. Instead the focus was on his wife Michelle -- and an emotional appearance by the democratic icon, Ted Kennedy.
