Winter visitors to northern Germany are being treated to a strange spectacle: thousands of cranes are not flying south for the winter, instead remaining in their northern roosting areas. Just a decade ago, cranes were unheard of here in the wintertime.

Ornithologists say it’s a general trend: migratory birds are returning from the south earlier and earlier, and some are even spending the winter up north. For the researchers, this is a clear indication of a long-term change in the climate.
