Madagascar's military says it's in control of the country, after President Andry Rajoelina was impeached while in hiding. He fled the country when a powerful military unit joined anti-government protests. The demonstrations were sparked by high unemployment and corruption allegations.

After weeks of protests in Madagascar, President Rajoelina was impeached by lawmakers despite his attempt to dissolve parliament. Elite CAPSAT forces quickly took control, suspending the constitution and pledging reforms. The ousted president fled the country, while jubilant crowds in the capital celebrated what they hope marks the beginning of real change.
