Despite massive amounts of development aid being pumped into Africa, results have been mixed. The UN is trying to change that with the Millennium Villages Project. Since 2004, the Kenyan village Sauri has been taking part in this big experiment.

Sauri in Kenya was among the villages chosen for the project in 2004. New technical input and incentives have been introduced to fruitful effect. The distribution of mosquito nets and meals at schools has seen pupil numbers double. Project staff also donate fertilizer so that farmers can boost their harvests and invest in the more lucrative business of vegetable production.
