Wildfires raging across the province of Ontario have blanketed parts of Canada and the United States in hazardous smoke, disrupting daily life and transport.
In Toronto, a thick haze turned the sky orange and pushed air pollution to the highest level in the world, forcing event cancellations. Rail services were suspended after a freight train became surrounded by flames, though all workers were rescued safely.
As the smoke drifts south into the US, health alerts remain in effect. Experts do expect conditions to improve ahead of the FIFA World Cupfinal near New York.
