Most Germans see Trump's policies as threat to NATO
January 16, 2026
Most Germans believe US President Donald Trump's policies are putting the NATO alliance at risk, according to a new poll.
Some 78% of respondents to the ZDF Politbarometer survey said Trump's approach endangers the alliance, while 18% disagreed. The remainder said they were unsure.
The survey comes as Trump presses US claims over Greenland, the resource-rich Arctic island that belongs to NATO member Denmark but has wide autonomy.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has said that an attack by the US on Greenland would end the long-standing alliance.
The poll also asked how the European Union should respond if the US were to intervene militarily in other countries in violation of international law to secure economic resources.
A clear majority of 69% said the EU should oppose such actions. About 22% said Brussels should stay out, while only 5% said the EU should back the US.
German public opinion split on Iran
Meanwhile, opinion in Germany is split over possible US intervention in Iran, amid mass protests against the country's ruling regime.
About 37% of Germans said they would welcome US intervention to end the current regime, while an equal share opposed it. Another 13% said they did not care.
