The majority of German citizens would welcome the introduction of a sweeping speed limit on Germany's notoriously fast highways. Social Democrat and Green politicians have been calling for a move to limit traffic to traveling at speeds of 130 kilometres per hour. In a survey conducted by German research institute Forsa, and commissioned by the Hamburg-based magazine Stern, 52 percent of Germans said they would like to see the speed limit implemented. 45 percent were opposed to the suggestion, and three percent were undecided. Recently, the Chairman of the Parliamentary Environment Committee, Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker, and CSU parliamentarian Josef Göppel have also started banging the drum for the speed restriction. As it stands, many of Germany's highways have no speed limit at all.
