A team of architects in Bengaluru designs beautiful homes built with mud, not cement. They stay cool in summer, while cutting emissions and energy costs.

Mud homes are sustainable and cool — two big benefits in the climate crisis. Around a third of India’s greenhouse gas emissions come from the construction and operation of conventional buildings. The low-carbon houses made by architects in Bengalaru have local and global advantages. Whereas cement, concrete and steel are energy intensive to produce and transport, these eco-friendly homes are made from natural materials sourced locally. Mud walls keep interiors cool, even as temperatures rise, so green living is more pleasant, too. The houses cost 10% more to build, but they typically don’t need air conditioning — saving electricity.
