Multiple fatalities as Nepal police fire on protesters

Officials in Nepal say at least 16 people are dead and dozens more injured after police opened fire on protesters. Tens of thousands of people, mostly youths, rallied against corruption in the capital, Kathmandu, following the government's ban on social media platforms — including Facebook, X and YouTube.

Tens of thousands of young protesters took to the streets of Kathmandu to demonstrate against corruption after Nepal's government imposed a sweeping social media ban.

What began as a peaceful march was met with a violent response by riot police.

Protesters voiced anger about censorship, corruption and economic hardship — demanding transparency and the restoration of free speech.
