Munich Beats Manchester in Chicago

July 26, 2004

Bayern Munich notched up a victory in their only appearance at the Champion's World Series in the United States on Sunday with a 4-2 penalty shoot-out victory over Manchester United in Chicago. Bayern, playing one game in the multi-nation showcase before returning to their Bundesliga preparations, were held 0-0 in regulation time by a Manchester team fielding only two first team players. However, the Germans held their nerve in the penalty decider at Soldier Field after United debutant Alan Smith and team-mate John O'Shea both missed spot-kicks to hand victory to their rivals from the Bundesliga. Bayern secured victory through penalties from Torsten Frings, Mehmet Scholl and Michael Ballack with Roque Santa Cruz netting the winner.
