Munich: 'Body Worlds' Exhibit Unconstitutional

January 27, 2003

The city of Munich wants to ban the controversial "Body Worlds" exhibit that is scheduled to open Feb. 28. A final decision is expected to be made by the Munich City Council on Wednesday.

The exhibit, organized by anatomy professor Gunther von Hagens, includes plasticized corpses and body parts. It has drawn millions of visitors in the European cities where it has previously been shown. But authorities in Munich say the exhibit violates the German constitution and a Bavarian burial law. In the southern state, as elsewhere in Germany, bodies must be buried no longer than 96 hours after death.

The state is also seeking an injunction to prevent Hagens from carrying out a public autopsy in the city. During the show's stop in London last November, Hagens conducted an autopsy before a live audience and television cameras -- the first public autopsy in 170 years.
