The digital revolution has now reached the museum world. A growing number of them are now setting up sophisticated websites, interactive smartphone apps and multimedia tour guides in order to boost their appeal to the younger generation. The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam has been among the pioneers since it reopened in 2013.

Visitors to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam can now look forward to digital support. A phone app enables them to compile their own individual tour. And the trend for showing works of art online is also growing. The Europeana digital heritage network already archives images of some 30 million items from 2,300 cultural institutions, while Google’s Art Project gives users a virtual tour of over 250 museums across the planet.
