Making music is a big challenge for the brain, and even seniors can start learning to play a new instrument. Studies show that music stimulates certain areas of the brain, helping to keep you mentally fit.

For example, playing piano every day improves memory retention, self-discipline and motor skills. Regular practice even changes the anatomy of the brain -- building it up and preventing degeneration.
