Resting in utter stillness, Kenya's Lake Bogoria can turn into a busy ocean of pink over night. When flamingos descend on the lake seemingly out of nowhere, William Kimosopp is spell-bound. The chief ranger of the Bogoria Natural Reserve is a great fan of what he considers the most elegant creatures in the world. Should flamingos ever be gone, it's as if a part of our own life is taken away, he says.

About "My favorite"

With all the talk of endangered species, the value of biodiversity and the usefulness of ecosystems, we sometimes forget why plants and animals are really worth protecting: because we love them, or depend on them for our own wellbeing.
