Myanmar Activists Reject Planned Polls

February 11, 2008

Several of Myanmar's opposition groups have rejected the military junta's plans for a constitutional referendum in May. The All Burma Monks Alliance and the Generation 88 Students group described the proposals to hold a referendum in May and elections in 2010 as an attempt by the Junta to hang on to power. The groups, who organized last year's pro-democracy, protests, called on the government to hold reconciliation talks with the opposition and representatives of ethnic minority groups.
