Myanmar has started voting in its first election since the military ousted the civilian government in 2021. Turnout has been low in the first of three phases of the general election, held under tight restrictions.

As Myanmar votes for the first time since the takeover of the military junta in 2021, hopes for democracy are dim. The military-run election excludes most opposition parties and is condemned as a sham by the UN and foreign governments. Amid a civil war that has killed more than 6,000 people and displaced millions, many in Myanmar see little chance for change, though some voters still cling to hopes for peace.
