Neo-Nazis commemorate death of Hitler deputy Hess

August 19, 2003

Around 2,600 neo-Nazis staged a memorial march in Wunsiedel in Bavaria on Saturday in honor of the 16th anniversary of the death of Hitler's deputy Rudolf Hess. Police arrested 67 marchers for carrying Nazi symbols or weapons. Around 1,000 policemen and women were on duty to prevent the situation from escalating. 500 people demonstrated against the memorial march in Wunsiedel, holding posters with "Wunsiedel is not brown, it's multi-colored." Rudolf Hess was buried in Wunsiedel after he died in the Allied Prison in the Spandau district of Berlin in 1987. Marches in his honor take place every year on August 16.
