Fierljeppen, jumping over canals with poles, was once part of everyday life for people in the Netherlands because there were often no bridges. Today, it is a recognized sport with competitions and championships.

Michiel Zijlstra, a 20-year-old apprentice shipbuilder, competes in Friesland’s traditional sport of fierljeppen, a daring mix of pole vaulting and long jumping over water. At the junior championship, he lands a strong second jump of 20.66 meters, taking the lead. Fierljeppen, once a farmer’s technique, is now Dutchcultural heritage.
