More and more young people in the Netherlands are working to keep traditional milling alive — by literally keeping some of the country's best-known landmarks turning.

Young Dutch volunteers are helping keep centuries-old windmills alive by learning the traditional trade of milling.

Daniel, a carpenter training as a volunteer miller, spends his weekends mastering the craft with mentor Jesse in 't Veld. From positioning the sails to harnessing the wind to grinding grain into flour, the work requires skill, patience and close attention to the weather.

As more young people seek a break from an increasingly digital world, interest in traditional milling is growing. Volunteers hope preserving these working windmills will keep an important part of Dutch cultural heritage alive for future generations.
