Zohran Mamdani was elected mayor of New York on Tuesday. It's a stunning ascent for the 34-year-old self-described democratic socialist.

In a victory for the Democratic party's progressive wing, Zohran Mamdani defeated New York former-Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa to become mayor-elect of the biggest city in the United States.
