Next Climate Talks Convene in Germany
December 18, 2004Participants at the UN Climate Change Conference in Buenos Aires decided early Saturday to hold informal international talks on future efforts to fight global warming in Bonn, Germany in May. The future of the fight against climate change dominated discussions at the two week conference bringing together 2,000 diplomats and, in its closing days, a clutch of environment ministers. The agreement to meet again in Bonn, the seat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, came after marathon talks continued until Saturday morning, a day after the official close of the conference. In May, international experts will take a first stab at discussing options for strengthening the fight against the greenhouse effect in the decade after the first phase of the Kyoto Protocol ends, in 2012. The meeting has been billed as a "seminar" to underline that no decision will be taken.
