Next Level Hate - Far Right Extremism on Gaming Platforms
May 15, 2026
Most platforms are subject to regulation — but far-right ideology is nonetheless able to spread in associated forums.
Originally just a form of entertainment, the gaming world is now part of mainstream society — comprising spaces that become stages for extremist political agitation. Security authorities have seen a rise in far-right activity in these online communities, while non-government groups warn of a growing risk of radicalization.
The gaming industry has undergone major changes in recent years. Developers are incorporating greater diversity into both characters and narrative perspectives: from female soldiers and Black main protagonists to queer love stories. At the same time, the gaming community has itself also become more diverse. These developments, however, have been accompanied by a growing backlash, with critics arguing that games should not include "political messages". The reactions are particularly fierce from right-wingers - ranging from mass online campaigns to boycott calls and even the direct harassment of creators and players. The gaming world, say some observers, has become a new cultural battleground.
Steam, Twitch, Discord and other platforms are being used to target and recruit young people — through incitement, sarcastic memes and anti-woke rhetoric. What might look like juvenile humor serves as bait to draw gamers into a radical worldview. So: what's the answer when it comes to countering this form of far-right online extremism?
This documentary highlights the dangers of radicalization in the online gaming scene — following players, researchers and activists who are pushing back against far-right influence in the digital sphere.
