The official Star Wars website released the name of the next film in the blockbuster series on Monday.

"We have the greatest fans in this or any other galaxy. In appreciation of the fans, we wanted them to be the first to know the title of the next chapter in the Skywalker saga: STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI," Disney said in a statement.

The upcoming film had previously been known only as "Episode VIII" - the second of three parts in the Disney reboot of the sci-fi saga.

Disney has not released details of the plot, but it will continue to follow the adventures of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) from where 2015's "The Force Awakens" left off.

Fisher recorded the scenes for the movie before her death sudden death in December, Disney said at the time.

The film will include some of the cast from the "Force Awakens," including Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver and  Lupita Nyong'o.

Eagle-eyed fans on Twitter also spotted that the title of Episode VIII was included at the very outset of "The Force Awakens," during the trademark written text introduction scrolling across space.
