Young jazz musician Deniz Benzetsel is angry: "First and foremost, we have to reclaim our freedom of expression here," she says. "Art can only be free without censorship!" The musician, who performs with her band under the name Alaska, is not alone in her opinion. A study by the MAK Center for Social Research released this year found that nearly two-thirds of young Turks are considering emigrating. According to the study, one in two respondents is pessimistic about their personal prospects. High inflation and the stagnating economy are taking a toll on daily life. Surveys indicate that young Turks are looking primarily toward Europe. Although Turkey is still officially an EU candidate country, President Erdogan's rule is so authoritarian that this now seems completely unrealistic. A report by Gunnar Köhne and Nevin Sungur.
