North Korea abandons goal of reunification with south

North Korea has removed all references to a future reunification with South Korea from its constitution. North Korea expert Rachel Minyoung Lee explains what this means going forward.

North and South Korea are still technically at war following the conflict that ended with the partition of the Korean Peninsula in 1953.

According to North Korea expert Rachel Minyoung Lee, reunification remained a long-term goal for both Koreas for decades after the split.

Pyongyang's removal of that objective from its constitution signals a tougher, more permanent break.
