While much of Europe has cut its links to Russia, Norway's collaboration on cod with the country continues. The EU is concerned that the pact could threaten the continent's safety.

Norway's long-standing cooperation with Russia over Arctic cod is drawing renewed scrutiny as geopolitical tensions rise. The Barents Sea is one of the world's most strategic maritime regions. It is home to critical infrastructure such as undersea cables that are vital for European data and telecommunication transfers.

The Russian fishing vessels operating in this area have been accused of espionage. Despite concerns about security risks, including alleged surveillance linked to Russian vessels, Norway maintains its joint fisheries cooperation with Russia to preserve valuable fish stocks and support coastal economies. The arrangement highlights a growing dilemma between economic dependence, environmental cooperation and national security — one that is increasingly watched by the European Union and NATO allies.
