Nuremberg Castle

February 13, 2017

Rising above the center of Nuremberg is its castle and a landmark of this Bavarian city. It is seen as one of the most important medieval Imperial Castles in Europe.

In the middle ages, German kings (respectively Holy Roman Emperors after their coronation by the Pope) did not have a capital, but voyaged from one of their castles (Kaiserpfalz or Imperial castle) to the next where they would hold court. Thus, the castle at Nuremberg became an important imperial castle, and in the following centuries, all German kings and emperors along with their household stayed at the castle, some of them on several occasions. Archeological findings confirm that the castle already existed in the 10th century. Until the Late Middle Ages the castle belonged to the Salian and Hohenstauffen dynasties. In 1427 Imperial Nuremberg bought the castle and continued building work. Visitors can view the Imperial quarters or climb up the Sinweltturm tower (pictured) and be rewarded by a fabulous view across the city.
