Zohran Mamdani has made history as New York City's mayor-elect, becoming the first Muslim and South Asian to hold the office. The US Democrat called his win a step toward defeating President Donald Trump.

After winning New York City's mayoral race, the newly elected Zohran Mamdani declared: "New York will remain a city of immigrants, a city built by immigrants, powered by immigrants. And as of tonight, led by an immigrant."

A self-described democratic socialist, he promises rent freezes, free buses, and public child care. His campaign energized voters fed up with US President Donald Trump's anti-immigration stance and rising living costs. Critics question his experience, but supporters are hopeful. US Democrats hailed his win as a turning point.
