Obama defends secret surveillance program

US President Barack Obama has defended a controversial internet surveillance program less than 24 hours after the practice was exposed by a British newspaper. The PRISM measures introduced in 2007 collect and compare private data from millions of customers of big-name telephone and internet providers. It's been blasted as an overreaching intrusion by government into the private sphere.
