Three years ago, on October 7, 2023, Palestinian militants from Hamas and other groups launched an attack on southern Israel. It was the deadliest day in Israel's history. The militant attacks killed 1,221 people in total, according to a tally by French news agency tally based on official Israeli figures.

In response, Israel launched a military offensive against Hamas in Gaza that has left most of the Palestinian territory in ruins and killed more than 74,200 people. Those figures come from Gaza's health ministry, which is under Hamas authority and whose figures are considered reliable by the United Nations.
