On the Danube

Weltenburg Abbey is the oldest monastery in Bavaria, and is famous for its beer. Monks have been brewing the drink here since 1050, drawing water out of an 80-meter-deep well under the building. Just around the corner downstream is a gorge boasting cliffs up to 80 meters high. Our next stop is Kelheim, an ideal base for cyclists and hikers. Our tour down the Danube ends at the stone bridge in Regensburg, whose old town is a UN World Heritage Site. Among the highlights is a historic sausage joint dating back to the 14th century, and the gothic cathedral.
