On the Spot: Robert Enke 30 year-old Jena-born Enke's career began like a dream ... he played for Mönchengladbach, Portugal's Benfica and Barcelona. Aged 22, he went with the national team to the Confederations Cup in the US in 1999. But then things went wrong: Loaned by Barcelona to Istanbul's Fenerbahçe, he had a disastrous début, losing 0-3. His own fans pelted him with firelighters. Enke quit the Turkish club and went back to Spain. He returned to Germany on a free transfer in 2004. Now Enke is in goal for Hanover. His team mates elected him captain and the Bundesliga has voted him best goalie twice in succession. Next year, Enke is expected to travel as Germany's third goalkeeper to the European Championships. The story of a real battler.
